If he lights a flame in his hand, he’s preparing to give himself a pyromancy buff - The Power Within - that increases his damage by a good margin. He’ll also dodge more often - backflipping away after attacking before you have a chance to retaliate - so be ready to charge after him following one of his strikes. This includes simple slash combos, and bigger more fiery slashing attacks with a longer delay between strikes, but can deal a ton of damage. He’s very fast and agile, and able to pivot during his slashes to catch you as you try and move to the side. If you see him charging his staff pointed straight out while slowly raising to form a vortex at the staff tip - he’s charging a lethal Soul Stream attack that lasts fairly long and will quickly cut you down if you don’t get behind him or keep strafing as fast as possible.Ī coiled curved sword, giving him moves not unlike the Carthus skeletons and Dancer. He can also summon a magic greatsword with surprising speed, and you’ll only have a moment to react to the incredibly large arc that the blade can reach. He will also hold his staff close before firing off a salvo of soul shards in a large arc - requiring you to get up close and dodge to the side to avoid the arc - as it’s much harder to avoid the farther away you are.
This includes a homing soulmass that he’ll continue to use sometimes even after changing weapons - so beware of him striking before or after they fire at you. He may also try and push you back into the sweet spot range of his spear by using the Wrath of the Gods miracle - a damaging force shockwave that you’ll either need to backpedal or dodge when you see him casting - but if he kneels to the ground he’ll be going for a heal - so use the time to fight down anything he manages to heal.Ī coiled staff, in which he begins to cast several spells. If his charging up has him holding the spear low, he’s getting ready to charge a great distance - and dodging back will rarely help, so move to the side instead. If he charges up with his spear over his head, he’ll be performing the spin sweep weapon art - a two-spin attack that can deal a lot of damage, and is hard to dodge, but does have openings near him when he performs it. Fight like you would any other sword user, and dodge aside from the strikes to find an opening - but be ready to block or move away when his next attack begins.Īt around a quarter of his health, he’ll transform his coiled sword into another weapon - dramatically changing his moveset and requiring you to change your tactics. Like another human opponent, he’s also adept at back-stepping to dodge into a forward attack, or even using sword weapon art stances for a long lunge or shield-breaking sweep. Watch the movements of his weapon to see if he’ll strike once or twice, and sometimes even follow up with a large overhand strike, or a vicious uppercut attack.
From here, head up the long path into a ruinous arena, where the very Soul of Cinder awaits you to battle over the First Flame.Īs the fight begins he will race towards you wielding a coiled sword as a weapon, and use it to great effect it has flame trailing lunges and stabs.
To do so, use the coiled sword on the left to transport down into the Kiln. The place is a fever-dream, and you must find the flame. Leaving the flameless shrine, behold a truly mindbending sight as you look out over the Kiln of the First Flame. You can light a bonfire here to travel back to the real Firelink Shrine if you wish, and if you check, Ludleth of Courland has burned away, leaving his Skull Ring (although you can still transpose items from his ashes). When you awaken you’ll be in a much darker and decrepit Firelink Shrine, this is no Untended Graves - but the site of the first linking of the flames. The flame will be transferred to you - so that you may journey to relink the First Flame. Once done, speak to the Fire Keeper, and kneel at the bonfire. To access the last area you’ll travel to - you must bring the Cinders of the Lords to their respective thrones.
